Show Prep Detangling: Getting a Show Ready Mane and Tail

September 23, 2026 | Kate Attard

Tangled mane or tail before a show? Here's a simple detangling routine to get a smooth, glossy finish without breakage or drag time.

Nothing eats into show morning like a mane or tail full of knots. Rushed brushing pulls hair out, breaks it, and leaves you with a dull finish right when you want your horse looking its sharpest.

A show morning detangling routine

  • Start the night before if you can, tangles are easier to work through when you're not racing the clock
  • Spray a detangler through the mane and tail rather than brushing dry
  • Let it sit a few seconds so it can work through the hair
  • Brush from the bottom up in small sections, working knots out rather than dragging through them
  • Finish with a light pass through the whole length for shine

Our Detangle It spray is built for exactly this, a concentrated, spray-through gloss that smooths and detangles in one step without leaving sticky residue or attracting dust in the yard. A little goes a long way, so it holds up through a long show day.

Pair it with our Wash and Silk Collection the night before for a full wash day to show day routine.
